The Ridge Route Alternate, opened in 1933. This new road ran through Piru Gorge instead of along the ridge lines as the Old Ridge Route did. The need for straighter alignments, longer sweeping curves and a more direct route was driven by the constant improvements to cars.
As traffic increased and cars were able to move much faster, the booming Ridge Route Alternate quickly became one of the busiest highways. Some of it is still used to this day, other portions are closed to traffic and (my favorite) some portions now lay under the water of Pyramid Lake.
